On February 6, 1778, France and the United States signed two historic agreements at the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris: the Treaty of Amity and Commerce and the Treaty of Alliance. Negotiated through the efforts of Benjamin Franklin and his fellow American commissioners, these agreements established the formal alliance that would prove decisive in securing American independence.

Two hundred and fifty years later, the Fête de l’Alliance / Festival of the Alliance will commemorate this pivotal moment in the history of France, the United States, and the transatlantic relationship.

The Festival will bring together leaders from business, philanthropy, government, academia, and civil society to celebrate the shared history and enduring values that unite France and the United States.

Inspired by Benjamin Franklin's example as a diplomat, scientist, entrepreneur, and champion of Enlightenment ideals, the Festival will explore how transatlantic partnerships can advance innovation, democratic governance, and shared prosperity in a rapidly changing world.

Beyond commemorating an extraordinary historical achievement, Alliance250 seeks to inspire new relationships and commitments to action that will strengthen the transatlantic alliance for generations to come.

The Benjamin Franklin Initiative

The Fête de l’Alliance is the culminating commemorative event of the Benjamin Franklin Initiative (Franklin250), a joint undertaking of the Society of the Cincinnati, the Tocqueville Foundation, and the National Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

The initiative launches at the U.S. Embassy in Paris on December 3, 2026, on he 250th anniversary of Benjamin Franklin's arrival in France, with The Light of Freedom 250, a colloquium devoted to Franklin's legacy, Enlightenment values, and the future of the transatlantic alliance.

Through 2027 and culminating during week of January 31 to February 4, 2028, the initiative will host gatherings in both France and the United States that celebrate the transatlantic alliance by recalling its vital role in American independence.
